Tags & Categories for Marketing List Segmentation

StandOut Be Different

A question I get asked a lot is how to setup tags and tag categories for marketing automation. Whilst there is no one size fits all, there is a structure which is a good place to start, and you can then evolve it to fit your business.
Being able to segment your database, your contacts, customers & prospects allows for highly targeted marketing. You can narrow down to specific groups and send the right messages to them at the right time.
I like to see a tag and have it named so well I know what it is being used for. Having a solid naming convention makes a massive difference.

Simple syntax to leverage: Category – subcategory – specific detail

Some general notes:

  • make sure you add a description for what a tag is being used for
  • all tags should have a category
  • only create tags you need
  • don’t leave a process tag on a contact record, clean up tags
  • plan out campaigns/sequences before you build
  • tags should be meaningful when you read them
  • it’s okay for a user to have multiple tags
